He was a member of the Midland Volunteer Fire Department and a fifty-year member of the American Legion Post #143 of Midland. He also spent four years on the Haakon County School Board, and served twenty years as a board of director for West Central Electric. He spent sixteen years on the Midland School Board, which provided him the opportunity to present diplomas to both of his children. Cliff was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Midland. He farmed all his life in Midland, and also hauled cattle and grain before retiring in 1990. Cliff broke up some of the first farm ground north of Midland, in Stanley County. The following day they moved to a ranch north of Midland. He was honorably discharged in March of 1946.Ĭliff was united in marriage to Joy Moyer on Main Crawford, Nebraska. In March 1943, Cliff entered the United State Army, participating in the Pacific Theatre and Okinawa.

He then attended Liberal High School in Liberal Missouri, graduating in 1940. Cliff grew up and received his first eight years of school at Excelsior Rural School in Iantha, Missouri. 'Cliff' Phillips was born December 1, 1922,at home in Barton County, Missouri, the son of Earl Glenn and Amanda (Ball) Phillips.
